Our BnB Hostess suggested we visit Zaanse Shans to see the Dutch Windmills. It is a living and working community.
Zaanse Schans derives its name from an earthwork or sconce from the eighty years' war (the Dutch revolt against Spain)
1594 the crankshaft was invented by Cornelis Corneliszoon van Utgeest. The crankshaft made it possible to convert the horizontal wind direction on the winmill sails into a vertical sawing movement. The made windmills able to saw more wood, than possible by hand.
The windmills are all working mills, and the perform various functions, including a saw mill, a paint mill (grinding pigments), and oil mill (grinding linseed or peanuts to draw off the oil).

The homes are lived in. The community is very well kept.

The village was a nice break from the city. The rain held off.
