Amsterdam Quirks

Walking along the beautiful streets of Amsterdam, I noticed hooks sticking out the top floor of the houses.  I was curious enough to ask why?
Amsterdam is a city filled with canals.  The higher floors are the safest place to store anything that can be damaged in flooding.  The houses have a large arm or hook sticking out on the top story. Items can be pulled to the desired floor.

The homes have narrow staircases, furniture is lifted using the hooks

These hooks vary from house to house, from very simple to decorative.

Tall, narrow, colourful

All types of boats, including house boats

The canals had wonderful fall colours

I walked everyday, exploring
